A buffoon is someone who does silly, clown-like things — making faces, telling loud jokes, or acting so that people laugh. In older writing it was a court , a person whose job was to be funny. Today it can still be half-kind (he is a bit of a buffoon, but we like him), but it is often : you are saying the person is foolish, not just playful. It is a slightly old-fashioned, word. In everyday talk people are more likely to say clown, idiot, or fool. There is a verb too, though you will not hear it much: to buffoon is to play the fool.

組成From Middle French bouffon, from Italian buffone (a jester), from buffare, to puff the cheeks out — the face a comic makes. The puffing is thought to be a sound-word, and it is compared with English puff.
