Buckskin is strong, soft leather made from the skin of a deer, or sometimes a goat. It is dull rather than shiny, and people have long used it for jackets, gloves, and trousers. In stories of the American frontier, “buckskins” can mean the clothes themselves. The same word is also a colour — a pale yellow-tan, like the leather — and some horses of that colour are called buckskin too, but the first meaning is the leather. “Buck” here is the animal, not money.
