Buckinghamshire is a county in central southern England, not far from London. In everyday British English people often it to Bucks — on , road signs, and in the news. The name now looks like Buckingham + shire, and that is a fair way to read it: shire is the old English word for a county. The town of Buckingham sits in the county. Buckingham Palace shares the name, but the palace itself stands in London, not in Buckinghamshire — same name-history, not the same front door. You say “in Buckinghamshire,” not “a Buckinghamshire.”
