Brum is a short, everyday name for Birmingham, a big city in the middle of England. People who live there, and people who know the city, say Brum the way some people say “NYC” for New York: “I’m going up to Brum.” You will hear it in speech and see it in papers and on signs. It is informal and friendly, not an official name. It is a of Brummagem, an old local form of Birmingham. Though actually, there is another famous Birmingham — in Alabama, in the United States — and Brum is not used for that one.
