1. 1

A brontosaurus is a huge plant-eating dinosaur with a small head, a very long neck, a long heavy body, and a long tail. The name was built to mean thunder lizard, from the idea that something so big would shake the ground when it walked. Children know it from toys, picture books, and films; it is the classic long-necked giant. Though actually, the tidy school picture is tidier than the science. For many years specialists said Brontosaurus was not a separate dinosaur at all, only another name for Apatosaurus; later some researchers argued the old name should come back. In ordinary talk, people still say brontosaurus for that famous shape, and they are understood. The usual plural in everyday English is brontosauruses; brontosauri sounds more Latin and a bit showing-off.
