When the weather is broiling, it is so hot that you feel cooked. People say a broiling afternoon, broiling sun, a broiling day. It is a picture-word: the heat is doing to you what strong heat does to meat. You hear it more in American English; British speakers more often say or baking. It is informal, and newspapers like it when they want the weather to sound dramatic. Though actually, the same -ing word is also just the ordinary cooking word: broiling a fish is cooking it under a strong heat from above (what British English calls ). That is a different job for the same shape. This entry is the weather one.
