Britpop was a kind of British guitar-band music that exploded in the 1990s. The songs often had tunes you could hum after one listen, words that were clever, cheeky, or very English in a small-life way, and a beat you could dance or jump to. The classic picture is a small band: drums, one or two guitars, a singer. Blur and Oasis are the names everyone still knows; the papers even sold a ‘Battle of Britpop’ between them. Though actually, Britpop was more a media sticker than a club the bands joined — some musicians hated the word, and the scene was never only one sound. It looked back to older British pop (The Beatles, The Kinks) and dressed it in 90s attitude. It does not mean all pop music from Britain, then or now; it points to that 90s guitar-pop moment, and people still use it with a little nostalgia.
