    Bristol is a city in the southwest of England. It is a port, and for a long time it was a busy trading and industrial city. It is also a centre for local government. The Clifton Suspension Bridge stands high over a gorge there, and that is the picture many visitors take home. The name is very old English: it first meant “the place by the bridge.” Later an extra l appeared at the end. Though actually that l was a spelling habit, not a new meaning: some accents drop an l sound, and people then stuck an l onto names where it did not belong. You say BRIS-tl, with a very small middle. Do not confuse Bristol with Brisbane in Australia.

組成From Old English Bryċġstōw, literally “the place by the bridge”: bryċġ (“bridge”) + stōw (“place”). The final l in today’s spelling came later.
