Bridgetown is the capital city of Barbados, a small island country in the Caribbean, and it is also the island’s main port. It sits on the southwest coast. Ships come in here, and a lot of the country’s business and government life is packed into this one city. The old harbour is a narrow called the Careenage; that is where the city first grew. The name looks like “bridge” plus “town”, and that is basically right. There was once a local bridge over the Careenage, so the place was called Indian Bridge. Later the name settled as Bridgetown. Another account also ties it to a man called Tobias Bridge. What matters for you is this: Bridgetown is this city, not just any town that happens to have a bridge. It is a proper name, so it always takes a capital B. People say it in a normal, matter-of-fact way, the same way you say .
