Bridgetown is the capital city of Barbados, a small island country in the Caribbean, and it is also the island’s main port. It sits on the southwest coast. Ships come in here, and a lot of the country’s business and government life is packed into this one city. The old harbour is a narrow waterway called the Careenage; that is where the city first grew. The name looks like “bridge” plus “town”, and that is basically right. There was once a local bridge over the Careenage, so the place was called Indian Bridge. Later the name settled as Bridgetown.
