Someone who fights — but a particular kind of fighting. A brawl is a rough, noisy, disorganised fight, often with several people, often in public, often outside a bar or at a match. So a brawler is a person who gets into fights like that, and usually the word suggests they do it more than once; it describes a habit, not a single bad night. It also gets used in sport: a boxer called a brawler is one who wades in and swings rather than moving , so it says something about style, not just temper. In video games the word has taken on a further life — a 'brawler' is a game where you walk along and punch enemies, and the fighting characters in such games are called brawlers. Common shapes: 'a bar brawler', 'a street brawler', 'a drunken brawler'. Note the verb 'brawl' behind it: people brawl in the street.
