Brand-new means new and not yet used — so new that nobody has worn it, driven it, opened it, or tried it out. A brand-new phone still has the plastic on; a brand-new pair of shoes has clean soles. People also stretch it to ideas and starts: a brand-new plan, a brand-new school year, meaning completely fresh, not second-hand in any way. It is a strong everyday word, a bit more colourful than just new. You will see it with a (brand-new) especially before a noun; some writers drop the after the noun (the car is brand new). Brand here is not the company name on the box.
「brand-new」指還沒有人用過的全新東西，新到沒人穿過、開過、拆過或試過。手機還貼著保護膜、新鞋的鞋底乾乾淨淨，都是它的畫面。它也能用在計畫和開始上，例如 a brand-new plan，語氣比 new 更生動一點。它常放在名詞前，寫成「brand-new + 名詞」。
放在名詞後時，有些作者不加連字號，例如「the car is brand new」。這裡的 brand 不是盒子上的品牌名，只是加強「全新」的語氣。
