A Brahman is a person of the highest rank in the Hindu faith — traditionally a priest and a teacher of the holy books. In older Indian society there were groups with different work and standing; Brahmans stood at the top of that order. In English you will also see Brahmin for the same kind of person; that spelling is very common, and you should not treat it as a different word. Though actually, English stretches this spelling in other ways too. In Hindu philosophy, Brahman can mean the great holy reality behind everything — not a person at all. And in the United States, people sometimes say “Boston Brahmin” for an old, rich, well-read family; they are borrowing the idea of a high, closed circle, not talking about Hindu priests. Here we mean the person of high rank.
