A boxcar is a railway wagon for goods, not for people. It has a floor, high sides, a roof, and usually a sliding door in the side, so the load stays dry and cannot tumble out — a closed box on wheels, pulled in a freight train. This is everyday American railway English; in Britain people more often say a goods van or a covered wagon. You meet it in stories about trains and the American West, and in the old phrase “riding the boxcars,” meaning hiding on a freight train, which is illegal and dangerous. It is a concrete, slightly old-fashioned word. Though actually, car here does not mean a car on the road: in railway English, car often just means one carriage of a train.
