A botnet is a large group of computers that someone has secretly taken over and now uses as a team. Each hijacked machine is called a bot; together they form a network — a botnet. The person in control can make them send spam (unwanted email), attack websites, or steal information, while the real owners often have no idea anything is wrong. The word belongs to computer security, but news stories use it too when a big attack happens. Though actually, bot here does not mean a metal robot in a factory. It means a program, or a computer, that is being run by someone else. The “net” is the web of machines, not a fishing net.
組成bot (a shortened form of robot: here, a hijacked computer or the program running it) + net (network). From bot + net.
