Picture a small insect that has got into an old book and is eating its way straight through it — paper, glue, page after page, until there is a neat hole running from the front cover to the back. That is where the word starts, and it is the whole word. Move the picture onto a person and nothing has to change: someone who goes through books that way, one after another, without stopping, is a bookworm too.
