Bombay is the old English name for India’s largest city, on the west coast. It is the capital of Maharashtra, a huge port and industrial centre, and the heart of the Indian film world. In 1995 the official name became Mumbai, and that is the name the city uses now. Many older English speakers, and some set phrases, still say Bombay. In India, Mumbai is what people want you to use; Bombay can sound like the colonial name they chose to leave. They are not two different cities. Same place, newer official name. In Chinese we mostly say 孟買 either way.

組成From Portuguese Bombaim, possibly from Marathi मुंबादेवी (mumbādevī, the goddess Mumba), or from Portuguese bom + baim. Most likely both of those fed the name.
