A bolthole is a place you can run to and hide. When trouble comes — noise, work, a family fight, the press — you go there and you are out of reach. In real life it is often a quiet flat, a cabin, a friend’s spare room, not a hole in the ground. The picture comes from an animal bolting into a hole. The word is mainly British, a little informal, and a little warm: a bolthole is yours, or feels like yours. Though actually, newspapers also use it for a politician’s secret hideaway, which can sound less kind.
