Bologna is a pale pink, finely chopped cooked sausage, usually sold in thin round slices. In the United States it is a very ordinary sandwich meat — the kind that goes in a child’s lunch with mustard. Americans almost always say it “ba-LO-nee,” like baloney, not like the Italian city. Though actually the name comes from Bologna in Italy, home of a famous cooked sausage (mortadella). American bologna is a cheaper, milder cousin of that idea, not the same thing as Italian mortadella. People also say “that’s baloney” to mean “that’s nonsense” — same sound, grown from the meat’s everyday, not-fancy image.
