On a cotton plant, the boll is the round case that grows after the flower. Inside it are the seeds, and the soft white cotton fibres grow packed around those seeds. When the boll is ripe it splits open, and that is when people pick the cotton. Farmers, , and history books about cotton use this word. It is not a general word for any round thing, and it is not a bowl you eat from — though actually it is an old cousin of bowl. Both come from old words for something round (a pod, a shell, a round object).
