    The bole is the main stem of a tree — the thick wooden part that stands up from the ground before the branches begin. It is not the roots, and it is not the crown of leaves; it is the body of the tree. People who work with trees (, foresters, writers describing woods) use this word. In everyday talk most people just say trunk. “Bole” is a quieter, more word for that same thing. Though actually there is another, rarer “bole” that means a kind of fine clay, from a different history; that is not this word. This one is the tree.
