When letters on a page or a screen are thicker and darker than the letters around them, they are boldfaced. Writers and designers do this so a word jumps out — a title, a heading, a warning, or the one word they want you to notice. You will also hear “bold,” “in bold,” and “boldface”; those are the everyday ways to say the same thing. “Boldfaced” is the form that sits in front of a noun (boldfaced type, boldfaced headings) or looks like a verb already done (the title was boldfaced). Though actually, in ordinary talk people more often just say “in bold.” There is another use that is not about printing at all: a boldfaced lie is a lie told with a straight face, as if the person feels no shame. That older “shameless” meaning is still around, but this entry is the printing one.
