1. 1

BMW is a German company that makes expensive, well-built cars, and also very powerful motorcycles. People often buy a BMW partly to show they have done well in life — that is how the word is used in ordinary talk, sometimes with a little envy or a joke, not only as a dry brand name. In English you say the three letters, B-M-W, and you can call the car itself a BMW: he drives a BMW. The name is borrowed from German; it is not an English phrase. The motorcycles are less common on the road than the cars, but they are a real part of what BMW makes.
