Bluegrass is a kind of American music from the southern and western United States. It is often fast, and it is played on instruments such as guitar, banjo, and violin (in this music people often say fiddle). Singers join in close, high harmony. It is not pop country and not the blues: it has its own tight traditional sound, though actually later players have stretched it. The music takes its name from Bill Monroe's band, the Blue Grass Boys. That name pointed at Kentucky, the Bluegrass State, where a grass grows that can look in late spring. The music word is first found in print in 1956. Among people who follow American folk, it is a precise style name, not a vague word for "country."
