    Bloodstock are horses that have been bred for racing. The point is the family line: people choose the mother and father with care so the young horse will run well. Racing people also use the word for the whole business of breeding and selling those horses. Blood here does not mean the red liquid; it means family, the line you come from. Stock here means animals you keep and breed — the same idea as in livestock. It is a specialist word. You will hear it from racing people and in the sports pages, not from someone talking about a pet. Though actually, not every horse counts: a farm horse or a riding-school horse is not bloodstock.
