    A bloater is a smoked fish, especially a whole herring that has been salted and smoked. The name is bloat + -er: the fish swell a little during preparation. It is British food English, and a bit old-fashioned now. You may still meet it on a breakfast menu in parts of Britain. is the cousin people mention more often (a is usually split open; a bloater is typically left whole). This is not the everyday word for a person who looks swollen — that is bloated. You will almost never need bloater in Taiwan daily life, except in British stories, menus, or food history.
