A bleeper is a small machine you used to carry in a pocket or on a belt. When someone needed you, it made short, high electronic sounds — bleeps — and that meant: find a phone and call them. Bleeper is the older British name, taken from the sound; American English usually says pager. Though actually, almost nobody carries one in ordinary life now. Phones took their place. You may still meet the machine in hospitals, where staff on call are bleeped, or in stories set in the 1980s and 1990s. The word can also mean anything that makes a bleep, but the learner's meaning here is that little “please telephone” machine.
