    To blazon something is to show it in a big, hard-to-miss way — as if it were painted on a shield. A slogan blazoned across a wall, a name blazoned on the front page: it is written or displayed so that nobody can look past it. You meet it most often in the passive: be blazoned across / on / with. It is a writer’s word, a little old-fashioned and a little grand; everyday English would say “splashed across” or “written in huge letters.” The older, technical home of the word is heraldry: a blazon is the official description of a coat of arms, and to blazon a shield is to set out those arms in the special language of heralds. The “shown in a noticeable way” sense grew from that picture of putting a sign on a shield for all to see.
