Blasphemy is the thing you say or do that insults God or people’s religious beliefs — the words, the joke, the act treated as an attack on what is holy. It is the noun. In some countries it is still a crime; in others it is mainly a moral or religious charge. People also use it more loosely for any disrespectful remark about a faith. It is a heavy word. Though actually, the same sentence can be blasphemy to one listener and “just talk” to another. The word names a wound in a community, not a fact that every person agrees on.
