- 1
To blaspheme is to speak against God, or against what a religion holds holy — to insult it, laugh at it, or treat the names of God and holy things as if they were just rude noise when you swear. It is a strong, serious verb. In some places it is even a legal word: a person can be accused of this. In everyday English people also stretch it a little, for any disrespectful talk about a faith. Religious people feel it as a wound; other people may use it only when they want to mark that a line has been crossed. Though actually, what counts as blaspheming depends on who is listening — a joke that one group finds harmless can be a deep insult to another.
