Blairism is the name people give to the political mix tied to Tony Blair, who led Britain’s Labour Party and was prime minister from 1997 to 2007, and to the “New Labour” project around him. In simple terms it said: we still want a fairer country — schools, hospitals, a chance for people who start with less — but we will not pay for that mainly by putting taxes very high, and we will not put a heavy government hand on companies and markets. Work with business; let private firms help run public services; be hard on crime; stay close to the United States. Supporters heard a modern left that could win elections. Critics on the left heard a Labour Party that had stopped being Labour; critics on the right still heard a big-spending state. The Iraq War later stuck to the word for a lot of people, though the first idea was about money, work, and public services, not about war. It is a newspapers-and-politics word, not street slang. It works like Thatcherism: a leader’s name turned into a package of ideas.
