A biretta is a stiff square cap that some Roman Catholic clergy wear, often with three or four raised ridges on top and a small puff in the middle. Colour can hint at rank — black is common for a priest, purple for a bishop, red for a cardinal — though you should not treat the colours as a strict test; custom varies a little. It is a church-dress word. You will meet it in writing about Catholic ceremony, not as street clothes. It is not the tall pointed hat a bishop wears in some services (that is a mitre), and it is not the soft round beret you see on soldiers or in fashion, even though the names are old relatives.
