A beret is a soft, round hat. A tight band sits on the head, and the top is loose and rather flat. There is no hard part sticking out at the front, so it is not like a baseball cap. People often make them from wool. In English, the hat still feels a bit French: painters, French street pictures, and some soldiers are the images that come to mind — though actually plenty of ordinary people just wear one because it is warm and easy. Armies sometimes use the colour of the beret to show which group you belong to (a “green beret” is a kind of soldier). It is a normal noun for a real piece of clothing, not slang.
組成English borrowed the word from French béret. That came from an old word in the south of France (Occitan) for a cap, and much further back from a Celtic word meaning “short,” like a short cloak.
