A biographer is a person who the story of someone else’s life. That book (or long piece of writing) is a biography. The biographer gathers facts, letters, interviews, and then tries to make a picture of the person — not only what they did, but what it felt like to be them, as far as anyone can know. Some biographers are careful and fair; some fall in love with their subject, or quietly against them, and the book shows it. Though actually, no biographer can put a whole life on the page; they always choose. The word is neutral and a bit formal, the ordinary name for the job. If you write your own life, that is an autobiography, and you are an autobiographer — close, but not the same. A biologist studies living things; that is a different bio- word entirely.
