1. 1

Biodynamics is a way of farming and gardening. It is a kind of organic farming — you do not put factory chemicals on the plants — but it does not stop there. The people who follow it hold a spiritual view of nature: the farm is one living system. Plants, animals, the soil, and even the moon and the seasons are all working together. They may plant by a special calendar, and they may make special mixes for the soil in ways that sound odd if you have never seen them, like burying things in the ground for a season, because they treat the soil as alive. Though actually, people argue about the extra spiritual steps. Some farmers live by the whole method; some scientists say the part we can clearly show is mostly careful organic farming and looking after the soil. You will meet the word on food labels and in garden writing, not in ordinary chat. It feels specialist, a bit serious about the earth. The word looks like a science word, but in everyday English it almost always means this farming method, not a school subject.
