Biodiversity is the variety of life in a place — not just “lots of animals”, but many kinds of plants, animals, fungi, and even the small differences inside one kind. A rainforest has high biodiversity. A parking lot has very little.

Biodiversity生物多樣性 is the variety of life in a place指一個地方生命的多樣程度——not just "lots of animals"不只是「動物很多」,but many kinds of plants, animals, fungi而是有很多種植物、動物、真菌,and even the small differences inside one kind甚至同一種裡面的小小差異。A rainforest雨林 has high biodiversity生物多樣性很高。A parking lot停車場的 has very little則非常少。

People use it in news, school, and government reports. Though actually, it has become a feel-good word: a company may say they “support biodiversity” without saying which living things, or whether those things are still there.

People use it這個字常出現在 in news, school, and government reports新聞、學校、政府報告裡。Though actually但其實,it has become a feel-good word它也變成一個讓人聽了舒服的字:a company may say they "support biodiversity"公司可能說自己「支持生物多樣性」 without saying which living things卻不講清楚是哪些生物,or whether those things are still there也不講那些生物是不是還在。

Scientists mean something you can try to count: how many kinds, how different they are, whether the web of life is still thick. Losing one famous animal is sad; losing biodiversity is the quieter of the whole mix, including things nobody has a poster of.

Scientists mean something you can try to count科學家講的是可以試著去數的東西:how many kinds有多少種,how different they are彼此差異有多大,whether the web of life is still thick生命的網絡是不是還很密。Losing one famous animal is sad失去一種有名的動物令人難過;losing biodiversity is the quieter thinning of the whole mix失去生物多樣性則是整個組合悄悄地變稀薄,including things nobody has a poster of包括那些沒有人幫牠做海報的東西。
