In show business, to bill someone is to put their name on the poster or programme as a particular kind of person in the show — most often the most important person. “She is billed as the star” means the advertisement tells you she is the one to come for. Top billing is the best place on that list, usually the top of the poster; a name lower down has second billing. Newspapers also say a film was billed as a comedy, even when it is not very funny — there the verb means “announced or advertised as.” People stretch it outside the theatre too: a politician can be billed as a . Though actually, the billing you meet far more often in offices means sending people a bill for money. That is a different use of the same spelling. This entry is only about whose name is sold to the public, and how large that name is printed.
