A bicyclist is a person who rides a bicycle — someone who goes places on two wheels. The word is a noun, not a verb: you say 'a bicyclist', not 'I bicyclist to school'. The everyday verbs are cycle or bicycle ('She cycled to work'). Cyclist is the more common word in British English and in sport; bicyclist spells out that it is a bicycle, not a , and can sound a little more formal or American. Road signs, news reports, and safety talk still use it. It does not by itself tell you whether the person is racing, commuting, or just going to the shop.

組成bicycle + -ist. bicycle is bi- ('two') + cycle ('wheel'), from Greek kyklos. -ist is 'a person who does this', from Greek -istēs, coming into English through French and Latin.
