A bicentenary is the day or the year when something important happened exactly 200 years ago — the 200th anniversary of an event, a founding, or a birth. It can also name the celebration itself. British English likes this noun; American English more often says bicentennial. You will see it on stamps, city festivals, and history pages. Though actually, people mix it up with centenary, which is only 100 years, and with bicentennial, which means the same 200 years but sounds more American. The bi- is the “two” that turns a hundred-year mark into a two-hundred-year one. It is a formal, commemorative word: parades, coins, museum shows, not a word for an ordinary birthday.
