A biathlon is a winter sports race that puts two things into one contest: long-distance skiing on snow, and shooting a rifle at targets. You will mostly meet the word around the Winter Olympics, or in talk about athletes who do that event. It is a sports-page word, not a kitchen-table one. The sense line says people ski across fields and then shoot; though actually they do not ski the whole way and fire once at the end. They ski, stop at a range, shoot, then ski again, several times in one race. If they miss, they usually have to ski extra or lose time, so a calm shot matters as much as strong legs. The tracks are snow and forest, not a green field in summer. Do not mix it up with a triathlon, which is swim, bike, and run, with no snow and no gun.
組成bi- (two; both) + -athlon (contest), modelled after pentathlon. The bi- piece goes back to the old Indo-European word for “two” (*dwóh₁).
