A bevy is a group — but a particular kind of group, and the word comes with a lot of baggage. It began as a hunting term for a flock of certain birds (quail, larks) or a group of roe deer, and English still keeps a handful of these old collective words: a pride of lions, a school of fish, a bevy of quail. From there it moved to people, and for centuries the standard use was 'a bevy of beautiful girls' or 'a bevy of young women' — a group of pretty women arriving together. That is still the phrase most dictionaries record, and you will meet it in older novels and in journalism. Be aware, though, that many people today find this use dated and a little uncomfortable, because it treats a group of women rather like a group of decorative birds; younger writers tend to avoid it. What has grown instead is a lighter, broader use meaning simply 'a large and impressive collection of', now applied to anything: 'a bevy of awards', 'a bevy of new features', 'a bevy of lawyers', 'a bevy of options'. In this modern use the flavour is journalistic and slightly showy — a headline word, chosen because it sounds more interesting than 'lots of'. It is always singular in form with 'of' after it, and it always suggests a number that is pleasingly large, never just two or three.
