Bevvy is a very casual British word for a drink, and nearly always an alcoholic one — usually beer. 'Fancy a bevvy?' means 'Want to go for a drink?' You will hear it most in the north of England, in Liverpool and Manchester especially, and in Ireland, though it has spread around Britain and Australia through television and football culture. It is friendly, cheerful, working-class in flavour, and completely out of place in writing or in any formal setting: nobody puts 'bevvy' on a menu. It is usually countable — 'a few bevvies last night', 'we had a couple of bevvies'. The plural 'bevvies' is probably more common than the singular. Two smaller points. First, the spelling wanders: bevvy and bevy both appear, and some people write bevvie. Because 'bevy' is also a completely different word meaning a group (see the next entry), careful writers use the double-v spelling for the drink. Second, there is a verb 'to bevvy' meaning to drink, and the adjective 'bevvied' (or 'bevvied up') meaning drunk — 'he was proper bevvied' — but the noun is what you will actually meet. This is a word to recognise when you hear it in a British film or from a British friend, not one to reach for in an exam.
