    You almost never hear betide as an ordinary verb now. What you will hear — often with a small smile — is woe betide someone. It means: if that person does this, they will be in trouble; something bad will come their way. “Woe betide anyone who eats the last .” It sounds old, like a warning in a story, so people use it more in fun than in real anger. Though actually, the word itself only means “to happen to” someone. Long ago you could say whatever may betide — whatever happens. That wider use has nearly died. The set phrase with woe is what is left.
