A beta-blocker is a kind of medicine. It blocks certain “beta” signals in the body, especially around the heart and blood vessels, so the heart beats more slowly and with less force. Doctors give it after a heart attack, and also for high blood pressure, some irregular heartbeats, shaky hands, migraine, and even stage before a concert — though actually the public often hears only the heart-attack story. It is a whole family of drugs, not one brand. In ordinary talk nobody the “beta”; it is just the name of the drug class. The is usual: beta-blocker.
