Berkshire is a county in the south of England, west of London. Windsor Castle sits in it, so people sometimes call the area royal Berkshire. Reading is the big town. You meet the word on maps, weather reports, and addresses. British people say BARK-shuh (or BARK-sheer). Though actually, many in Taiwan meet the word first on a menu: the Berkshire pig, a black pig whose meat is famous, was named after this county — that is the same name, used for the animal, not a second place.

組成From Old English Bearrocsċīr. The second piece is sċīr, “shire,” meaning county. The first piece is possibly from an old word meaning “hilly.”
