Benedictine is a strong sweet made from herbs — a French drink, deep golden, sipped in small glasses after dinner or mixed into cocktails. As a drink name it is a proper noun and takes a capital B: Bénédictine, often written without the accent in English. The name comes from monks. The makers said the recipe was created by Benedictine monks in a French monastery, and the bottle carries the letters D.O.M., short for a Latin phrase meaning "to God, most good, most great." Here is the "though actually" part: historians are fairly sure that story was invented by a 19th-century wine merchant who wanted the drink to sound ancient and holy. The monks are the marketing, not the recipe. The word has other lives you should recognise when reading. A Benedictine (noun) is a monk or nun following the rule of St Benedict, and Benedictine (adjective) describes anything belonging to that order — a Benedictine monastery, Benedictine monks. And in a restaurant, eggs Benedict is a different thing again: a breakfast dish, no connection to the drink.
組成From French bénédictin, from Latin benedictus meaning "blessed" — the name of Saint Benedict of Nursia, the 6th-century Italian monk. Benedictus itself is bene ("well") + dictus ("spoken"), so the root idea is "well spoken of, blessed." On the surface: Benedict + -ine, the ending that means "belonging to."
