Bell-ringing is the work or hobby of making church bells sound, usually from a tower, by pulling ropes in a team. In Britain this is a real tradition, not a picture from a film: people practise patterns called change-ringing, and a village may still hear it before a Sunday service or a wedding. The person who does it is a bell-ringer; bell-ringing is what they do. You would not normally point at someone and say “a bell-ringing.” Though actually, learners’ notes sometimes gloss it as “someone who rings church bells,” because that is the world the word belongs to — the people, the tower, the ropes — not a hotel bell, a bicycle bell, or a school bell. It is mainly British church life. Younger people in cities may never have stood in a tower, but they still know the sound. It is not a fancy word; it is just a bit specialised.
