Beijing is the capital city of the People's Republic of China. In English it used to be called , and that older name has not fully died. You will still see it in duck and University, which kept the old English form. Beijing is the spelling of 北京, literally ‘northern capital’ — so named to sit against Nanjing, the southern capital. The pairing of north and south capitals is an old court habit; Ming rulers used it when the emperor preferred to sit in the north but Nanjing still counted as a capital. In Taiwan you already know the city as 北京. In an English classroom you mainly need this: use Beijing for the city in modern writing, and do not be surprised when a menu or an old book still says . They are two English names for the same place, not two cities.
組成Borrowed around 1958 from Hanyu Pinyin Běijīng, the romanization of Mandarin 北京, ‘north’ + ‘capital’. English took the pinyin form; Peking is the older English spelling of the same Chinese name.
