If a person, a voice, a place, or even an idea is beguiling, it pulls you toward it. It is pleasant — a smile, a story, a view — and you want to look longer, listen longer, believe. The tidy dictionary says attractive and interesting, and that is the polite half. Though actually, the older verb underneath, beguile, means to charm someone, and sometimes to trick them while you do it. So the word can praise (a beguiling song) and warn (a beguiling offer). You meet it in books and careful speech more than in everyday chat. Most of the time it sits in front of a noun: a beguiling smile. It is not a child's word, and it is never only another way to say pretty.
組成The -ing form of beguile, used as an adjective. Beguile is built from an old prefix be- plus guile, an old word for clever trickery.
