In the Bible, the Beatitudes are a set of short sayings by Jesus that begin “Blessed are…”. Each one names a kind of person God especially cares for — the poor in spirit, people who mourn, the meek, people who hunger for what is right, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those who are treated badly for doing right. School books usually say there are eight, and they mean the list in Matthew, in the Sermon on the Mount. Luke has a shorter set, and he also adds “woes” (warnings). So “eight” is the tidy classroom answer; the Gospels do not all line up the same way. With a capital B, Beatitudes means this famous list. With a small b, a beatitude is just a blessing, or the state of being blessed — but students almost always meet the capital-B list.
