A beatific look or smile shows great peace and happiness — the face of someone who seems blessed, calm all the way through, not just cheerful. It is a , slightly church-flavoured word. You will meet it in stories, news about religion, and careful writing, not in the school corridor. A baby can have a beatific smile after feeding. A saint in a painting has a beatific expression. Though actually, people also use it with a little twist: someone looking beatific when they have just got away with something, or when they are blissfully ignoring the mess. Then the word is almost teasing. It describes a look, not a fact about whether the person is holy. It is much stronger and quieter than happy, and it is not another way to say beautiful, even though the two words sit near each other on the page.
